HAYWARD / SOUTH COUNTY CHAPTER BLACK WOMEN
ORGANIZED FOR POLITICAL ACTION RESOLUTION:

POLITICAL ADVANCEMENT FOR BLACK WOMEN

WHEREAS,  Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA) is strongly committed to supporting Black women candidates seeking public office; and

WHEREAS,  despite being 7.6% of the United States population, Black women are less than 5% of officeholders elected to statewide executive offices, Congress and state legislatures; and

WHEREAS,  the number of Black women in statewide elected executive office doubled between 2018 and 2019 (from three to six), Black women remain severely underrepresented as officeholders at the statewide executive level, holding just 1.9% of these positions. Just 15 Black women have ever held statewide elected executive offices, and no Black woman has ever been elected governor despite the first-ever major party nomination of a Black woman for governor in election 2018; and

BE IT RESOLVED,  that the BWOPA will work to increase the number of African American women elected to executive branches of both State and Federal Governments, County and City Governments, School Boards, and Community College Trustees by working together with other BWOPA chapters in supporting Black women running for public office; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,  that the BWOPA will establish a system to highlight Black women running for public office and identify ways to best support their respective races.
